Trooper stops wrong way driver on I-80

Tuesday April 18, 2023

On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at approximately 2:52 PM, a pickup truck pulling a uhaul trailer was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-80 near milepost 100 in Tooele County.  Tooele County dispatch put out an ATL for the vehicle on their radio channel.  A UHP Sergeant was westbound in the number one lane unaware of the approaching vehicle. He observed the wrong-way vehicle approaching and activated his emergency lights and siren.  He reduced his speed and stayed in the path of the wrong-way driver.  The wrong-way driver struck the Sergeant patrol car with the left front to left front.  The patrol vehicle was also struck simultaneously in the rear by a white pickup truck. The Sgt was taken by UHP to a local hospital as a precaution.  The driver of the wrong way was transported to a different area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The incident is being investigated by the Tooele County sheriffs office.  Please contact her for any specifics about this incident or any potential charges. The roadway was completely closed for about 1 hour until medical and the vehicles could be moved.  The right lanes were closed for 2 hours for clean-up
