San Juan Fatal Crash

Wednesday May 31, 2023

On Friday, May 26, 2023, at approximately 1:56 pm, a single-vehicle crash occurred at milepost 21 on SR-163 near Mexican Hat. A black Kia Optima was traveling northbound, crossing the San Juan River at the Mexican Hat bridge. On the north side of the bridge, there is a 90-degree righthand curve. The Kia failed to negotiate the curve and struck the cliff wall. The 49-year-old male driver sustained a fatal injury during the crash. The two juveniles (female 14, male 9) sustained severe injuries and were flown from the scene.

Lane restrictions affected the roadway for about an hour during the crash investigation.
