I-215 fatal crash

Friday September 9, 2022

On Thursday, September 8, 2022, at approximately 4:18 pm, a 2016 Volvo semi-truck hauling six vehicles on an auto carrier was traveling westbound on I-215 South approaching 500 West. The Volvo semi was approaching slow to stopped traffic in the number three lane just prior to the Union Park westbound merge. The Volvo semi struck a 2021 Hyundai Palisade occupied by one female adult and three juveniles. Following the initial impact with the Hyundai Palisade, the Volvo semi impacted four other vehicles which came to rest blocking all of I-215 westbound. Three of the occupants in the Hyundai Palisade suffered serious to critical injuries and were transported to local hospitals. A Six year old male passenger of the Hyundai later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries. The remaining occupants in the four other vehicles were also transported with minor to serious injuries. In total, nine drivers and passengers were transported from the scene. Both the UHP Major Crash Investigation Team (MCIT) and SBI are assisting with the investigation. All westbound lanes were closed due to the crash and re-opened at 21:48 hours.
