Grantsville Police Officer Involved in Critical Incident *** Updated

On Wednesday evening August 25, 2021, Grantsville City Police officers were involved in a critical incident on SR-112 milepost 5.25 in which an adult subject sustained fatal injuries.

On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at approximately 6:10 p.m., Grantsville officers identified a suspect in an active Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) case.  Officers attempted a traffic stop.  After a brief pursuit, the suspect stopped.  Once the vehicle stopped, the suspect charged the officers with a knife.  An Officer fired a weapon and struck the suspect.  Officers and medical personnel attempted life-saving measures but the adult male subject sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.  The Tooele County Attorney’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.  Further details are not available at this time.

Grantsville Police Department requested that the Utah State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) conduct an Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) investigation as per state statute. SBI agents responded to the scene and began their investigation into the event.

The incident is still under investigation and no further information is available at this time. As updates become available, they will be posted to DPS newsroom and disseminated to the media.

The suspect has been identified as Rodney Barton, 42 years old.
