Fatal Semi Crash in Summit County

Wednesday October 11, 2023

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at about 1200 pm, a single unit tanker truck pulling a tank trailer was westbound on I-84 near milepost 117.  The vehicle lost control and its trailer tipped over resulting in the truck rolling over as well.  The driver and lone occupant was killed in the crash.  The truck was loaded with about 11,000 gallons of gasoline which was leaking out onto the road and roadside.  Initially, only westbound I-84 was closed.  Due to the volume of fuel, fire units wanted a 1000 foot radius cleared which meant a closure of I-84 eastbound, and both sides frontage roads.  Cleanup and the investigation was slowed and hampered due to the leaking gasoline.  I-84 was eventually opened to one lane eastbound.  The westbound lanes remained closed until the truck was uprights and cleared.  The cause of the crash is under investigation.
