Fatal crash 8 miles east of Green River on I-70

Monday October 28, 2019

DPS Incident Notification 7538 (Crash – Fatal / Initial Information / Sent: 10-28-2019 16:04)

Section: 9 // District: A

Date: 10-28-2019

Time: 13:10

Location: I-70

Mile Post: 172

Travel Direction: East

Inv. Agency: UHP

Initial Description:On Monday: 28 October 2019 at approximately 1310 hours an eastbound 1999 Blue Lincoln Town Car was traveling on I-70 near milepost 172 (about 8 miles east of Green River). The vehicle was in the number 2 eastbound lane. The vehicle exited out of its travel lane and off the south-side (eastbound) shoulder of the interstate. Steering input brought the vehicle back onto and across both eastbound lanes of the interstate. The vehicle then traveled off the north side of the paved surface and began travel in the median where it overturned. The vehicle came to final rest on its roof. The driver (and sole occupant) was properly restrained inside the vehicle. The rollover caused the vehicle’s roof to collapse into the driver. This pinned the elderly male driver inside the vehicle. His seat-belt was cut and he was lifted from the vehicle. Once outside the vehicle, he no longer had a pulse and CPR was initiated. At 1340 hours, responding medical personnel indicated the man was deceased.

Update: The deceased driver is Douglas R Hughes, age 83, of Fountain Valley, CA
