Details on the OICI that occurred in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City involving SBI Agents

Thursday December 17, 2020

In the morning hours of December 17th, 2020, Agents with the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) observed alleged narcotic activity involving a silver Mercedes SUV in the downtown area of Salt Lake City. A traffic stop was attempted, and the driver of the Mercedes SUV fled. Agents did not pursue.

Agents were able to positively identify the suspect/driver of the Mercedes as a man with multiple warrants, at least one of which was a felony warrant for fleeing.

At about 3:00 pm, again on December 17th, 2020, Agents we’re able to locate the silver Mercedes and they covertly tailed it through Salt Lake City into a Rose Park Neighborhood. Some type of exchange occurred on Morten Drive off 700 N and two Agents with SBI discharged their firearms at the suspect/driver of the Mercedes.

The suspect drove from Morton Drive onto 700 N where he crashed into a FedEx delivery vehicle, shortly after the collision he was taken into custody. The FedEx driver was not injured.

The suspect sustained non-life threatening injuries from the shooting and subsequent crash. He was taken to the hospital, treated and evaluated by medical personnel and later released from the hospital.

All potential body cam footage of the incident is being turned over to the OICI Team.

The West Valley City OICI Team is handling the investigation into the matter.
