Fatal crash near Zions (Updated 9/7/21)

On September 6, 2021, at about 0900 hours, a gray 2005 Toyota Camry was traveling westbound on SR-9. Near milepost 23, near the town of Rockville, the driver of the Toyota lost control. The Toyota drifted right and overcorrected back to the left. The Toyota slid sideways and into the eastbound lanes of traffic. At this moment a white 2014 Ford Econoline was traveling eastbound and the driver saw the Toyota losing control. The driver of the Ford slowed down, but was not able to avoid the Toyota. The Toyota struck the front of the Ford with its rear passenger side in a T-bone fashion. The Toyota came to rest perpendicular to eastbound traffic off the right shoulder. The Ford was pushed over to the right and blocking the right lane. The driver and passenger (husband and wife) of the Toyota did not survive the crash and were pronounced dead on scene by medical professionals. Life Flight had responded and landed to assist with lifesaving measures. The driver and passenger of the Ford were transported to an area hospital in good condition by ambulance. We believe the occupants of the Ford were not using seatbelts. The driver of the Toyota was not wearing a seatbelt and the passenger of the Toyota was wearing a seatbelt.
