Fatal Crash SR-218

Thursday November 16, 2023

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, at about 2:37 pm, a green Toyota RAV4 was traveling eastbound on SR-218 near milepost 4. For an unknown reason, the Toyota drifted off the road to the right. It then continued down the embankment before striking a power pole, which caused it to flip in the air before coming to a rest upside down, facing westbound, in an irrigation canal. The canal had approximately 2 1/2 to 3 feet of water. The Toyota became partially submerged. A witness contacted 911 immediately. The female victim remained submerged for approximately 30 minutes before the vehicle was able to be raised enough to gain access to her. The 54-year-old female driver, Jeannette Rigby, was the lone occupant of the vehicle. To this point it is unknown what caused her to exit the roadway. Investigation is ongoing. The power pole was snapped in half. Power lines and communication lines were low hanging. The roadway was closed completely and remains closed at this time while Rocky Mountain Power replaces the pole. Traffic is being diverted around the area.
